Memphis-A short story- by Dit Dot

“ Yellow Jacket and Memphis “ written for Kaylan as a challenge.

Tyler was so excited to bring  Abigail to his hometown in Tennessee.  He was born in Memphis and stayed until he graduated from Rhodes College three years ago specialising in Physical Wellness.  Tyler was very motivated in this course and used the principals with his own lifestyle like eating healthy, going regularly to the gym, being very active and he is on a mixed basketball team at work.  He had dreams of playing for the Memphis Grizzlies but settled for his campus basketball team. It was too much of a commitment to be in the big leagues. Tyler was in excellent shape, slim, lean muscle and very tall.  A good fit for a basketball player.

Tyler moved to Cleveland Ohio for a job prospect in health and met Abigail at a conference.  They have been dating for two years and have gone on many adventures. This adventure was particularly meaningful to him.

“Are we almost there?”  Abigail asked as the wind from the open window tousled her long blond hair.

“Only an hour left my dear Abigail.” “We will be there soon and you will love it.”

Abigail removed her yellow spring jacket and placed it in the crowded back seat of Tyler’s blue Honda Civic.

“ I won’t be needing my jacket I don’t think.”

“No you won’t.”  He replied. “It will be eighty here today in Memphis.”

“Wow, quite a bit warmer then back home.”

“This is going to be so much fun to show you where I grew up but first I have a surprise for today.  It is a special month for something really cool. But I am not telling you.” he said as he laughed, teasing Abigail.

Abigail playfully slapped Tyler in the chest, “Stop being such a tease!”

“Hey you can’t do that!”  As he chuckled.

They arrived in Memphis at 10:20 am.  They had a long drive from Ohio and had spent the night in Nashville at the Alexis Inn Suites to take a break and they stayed the one night.  They were only five Minutes from the park now.

Tyler turned on Riverside Drive.  As they approached the park Tyler spoke up.

“This is Tom Lee Park.  It is a huge property, thirty acres!  When we go through the park we will be able to see the Mississippi River.  It is a beautiful spot.”

“Let’s go!”  Abigail squealed with excitement.

Tyler parked the car.  They both got out and stretched.  Four hours in the car this morning was tiring.  It was a seven hundred mile journey total. Tyler is glad they are staying a few days at his parents before they head back to Ohio so they can enjoy their five days away.

“I hope you are hungry.”

Abigail noticed the thick smoke rising from the park.  Then she spotted all the people, all the BBQ’s, music, people chatting and laughing.  Abigail was amazed.

“What is this Tyler?”

“This is the  World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. It happens every May for four days all across the world.  Even BBC News and The Food network come visit these events.”

Abigail looked around in awe.   “So many people, so many BBQ’s, So much food!!!  I am starving. “

“Told you that you would love it.”

Tyler and Abigail began to visit each section.  They decided on the BBQ that several people were cooking at.  The aroma was heavenly. Abigail watched as they poured on thick rich red BBQ sauce.  The sauce would sizzle as it dripped onto the hot grill.

When the ribs were ready  Tyler and Abigail helped themselves to a plate as the chefs placed a half rack of ribs on both plates.  Abigail’s eyes widened in astonishment.

“They are huge! “

“Good thing you are hungry!” Tyler nudged Abigail.

They took their plates, thanked the cooks, and headed towards the river to sit and eat their ribs with a beautiful view.  There was just a small breeze and the morning sun was lovely and hot.

“This is the best day ever Tyler!”

“It’s amazing to have you in my life Abigail, I am so happy I am able to share my history with you.”

“Tomorrow is another adventure.”

“I can’t wait!” Abigail said excitedly.

Welcome to my blog. I have been journal writing for years. I took a course in Creative writing and found I enjoy writing short stories and poetry. I write more when I am hypomanic or manic.
I went into Rehab for Alcohol Addictions and have been sober for fourteen years.
Shortly after I quit drinking I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2, I have since been diagnosed with Bipolar 1.
I enjoy talking about my story, for people to learn or relate. I try and have a healthy lifestyle and try to use my coping strategies. Life is just too boring without Bipolar, it is a blessing but yet sometimes a curse.
I am currently working on a book and dream of publishing one day.
I am so excited to have found Wordpress.
This is my new adventure.
